Jeweller credits his ‘agile’ fingers for being able to tie knots in arteriesA man with no medical training managed to save a young woman's life when both her legs were severed by a train and he tied the protruding arteries of her legs into knots. The woman was reportedly hoping to spend Sunday night under the stars with her boyfriend as they jumped onto a slow-moving freight train near Jonquiere, northeast of Quebec City. According to authorities, the 20-year-old woman lost her footing and fell under the wheels.

Amtrak to screen carry-on bags

CHICAGO -- Officials say passengers boarding Amtrak trains at Chicago's Union Station will now face random screening of their carry-on bags. Officials say the new policy goes into effect Thursday. Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said Wednesday the new security measure, which will involve Amtrak police swabbing carry-on items to detect explosives, is not in response to any new threat. Magliari said it represents an expansion of precautions that have been implemented on Amtrak lines in other parts of the nation. Cattle-based fuel runs Oklahoma-Texas passenger train

ABOARD THE HEARTLAND FLYER — Amtrak and transportation officials from Oklahoma and Texas have started a yearlong test to see whether beef-based biodiesel can efficiently run The Heartland Flyer passenger train between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth. Texas cattle are supplying 20 percent of the fuel for the 3,200-horsepower engine, the rest is regular No. 2 diesel.

Blasts derail Russian train in Dagestan

MAKHACHKALA, Russia – Two powerful explosions derailed a cargo train Sunday in the violence-plagued Russian province of Dagestan but no one was injured, officials said. The blasts capped a week of daily attacks that have killed at least 55 people. A blast equivalent to five kilograms of TNT exploded early Sunday near the town of Izberbash, derailing the locomotive and eight cars, transport police spokesman Akhmed Magomayev said. Robbers hit 2 trains moving across No. Ariz.

Northern Arizona authorities say two Mexican nationals have been arrested for allegedly trying to disable freight trains moving through the Flagstaff area. BNSF spokeswoman Lena Kent said the first burglary was reported near Williams Friday. Crooks cut the brake hoses on a train to disable it in order to offload a shipment of televisions, but were caught in the act. All except one got away. The second burglary was reported near Winona east of Flagstaff. Again, brake hoses were cut on a BNSF train. This time, burglars wanted computer equipment from a train car.

Deadly explosions on Moscow Metro system [UPDATE: 41 Dead; 2 Female Suicide Bombers]

At least 25 people are reported to have been killed in an explosion on the Metro system in central Moscow, with a second blast coming shortly afterwards. The first blast happened at the city's central Lubyanka station, reports quoting security sources said. A second explosion happened at the Park Kultury station, Russian news agency Tass reported. Ten people were injured in the first blast, Tass said, quoting the emergencies ministry. The number of casualties at the second blast is not yet clear.
